Celevac tablets are intended for the regulation of motor function of the colon in constipation and diarrhea, as well as in diverticulitis and ulcerative colitis. The drug is recommended in the availability of colostomy and ileostomy.
In addition, Celevac is prescribed as an additional means for the obesity treatment and appetite suppression.
Celevac: Dosage form
- Celevac is produced in the form of biconvex, pink tablets.
Tablets debossed with Celevac or Methylc on one side and have a breaking notch on the other side of the tablets. The drug comes in a polypropylene securitainers of 112 or 250 tablets each
Celevac tablets ingredients
- As an active ingredient, Methylcellulose is used.
This substance is a hydrophilic colloid, which absorbs moisture, swells and forms a gelatinous consistency of white color.
Methylcellulose liquefies the colon content and increases its volume due to the release of moisture. Herewith, the volume of fecal matter increases and intestinal motility is stimulated.
Each Celevac tablet contains 500 mg of Methylcellulose.
Beside the active ingredient, Celevac tablets contain inactive ingredients necessary for the drug production. Inactive ingredients: magnesium stearate, sodium saccharin, povidone, lactose monohydrate, erythrosine (E127) food dye, Strawberry flavor 52.318 AP and talc.
Celevac: Dosage and administration
- Celevac tablets are taken orally.
The tablets should be chewed in the mouth before swallowing. In contact with liquid, Celevac tablets swell, so ingest them with caution. This drug should not be taken directly before bedtime.
In the availability of ileostomy, colostomy and in diarrhea, 3-6 Celevac tablets are prescribed twice daily.
The amount of liquid should be minimized when using Celevac tablets. It is recommended to avoid using liquids within 30 minutes before and after the intake of Celevac tablets.
In diverticular disease and ulcerative colitis, 3-6 of Celevac tablets are prescribed in the morning and evening. The dose should be adjusted depending on the degree of constipation and fecal consistency.
In the case of constipation, it is recommended to take 3-6 Celevac tablets twice a day with a plenty of water (more than 300 ml). When the intestinal function normalizes, the dosage can be reduced.
For appetite suppression and obesity treatment, three Celevac tablets are prescribed as single dose, 30 minutes before food. Take these tablets with plenty of warm water.
Celevac tablets are contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Methylcellulose or other drug ingredient.
Celevac is contraindicated in:
- intestinal atony
- intestinal obstruction
- severe dehydration
- violation of swallowing reflex
- excessive compaction of feces
- infectious intestinal diseases
Celevac: pregnancy and breastfeeding
However, do not use Celevac drug during pregnancy especially during the first trimester. Before using Celevac during breastfeeding, it is necessary to weigh the expected benefits of therapy for the mother and potential risk for the baby.
Celevac: side effects
- The main side effects of Celevac are from gastrointestinal tract.
- They include abdominal bloating and flatulence.
Obstructive lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, fecal impaction and hypersensitivity are among other adverse effects, the occurrence of which can be associated with the use of a laxative, increasing the volume of intestinal content.
- Methylcellulose is not absorbed and the risk of flatulence and intestinal obstruction increases when using a high dose of Celevac.
If needed, it is recommended to wash out the stomach and use large amounts of liquids.
When developing acute intestinal obstruction, do an enema and fully rinse the rectum.
